چکیده

The swelling of sponge-like bicontinuous mesophases of bilayers of surfactant (or lipid) in water as a function of dilution is analyzed. Analytic formulae for the swelling are derived assuming ii) constant aggregate thickness and (it) fixed surface area per surfactant molecule at an imaginary surface located within the bilayer. Approximate swelling laws are derived for bicontinuous films and compared with swelling behaviour of disconnected sheet-like, rod-like and globular aggregates. It is shown that sponge-like "oil-in-water" bicontinuous aggregates can be readily distinguished from rods, sheets or globules in surfactant/lipid aggregates; the morphologies of aggregates of reversed curvature ("water-in-oil") are less easily deduced from swelling data. Accurate scaling laws for (ordered or disordered) symmetric and asymmetric

Novel surfactant mesostructural topologies: between lamellae and columnar (hexagonal) forms

Recent developments in theoretical and experimental studies of amphiphilic lyotropic ‘intermediate’ mesophase formation are summarized. For the purposes of the review, we consider intermediate mesophases to be self-assemblies with novel geometries and topologies, excluding lamellar, bicontinuous sponge, columnar (hexagonal) and micellar mesophases. Intermediates include novel branched bilayer t...

Lyotropic liquid crystal systems in drug delivery.

Lyotropic liquid crystal systems, such as reversed bicontinuous cubic and hexagonal mesophases, are attracting more and more attention because of their unique microstructures and physicochemical properties. Various bioactive molecules such as chemical drugs, peptides and proteins can be solubilized in either aqueous or oil phase and be protected from hydrolysis or oxidation. Furthermore, severa...

Medial surfaces of hyperbolic structures

We describe an algorithm for numerical computation of a medial surface and an associated medial graph for three-dimensional shapes bounded by oriented triangulated surface manifolds in threedimensional Euclidean space (domains). We apply the construction to bicontinuous domain shapes found in molecular self-assemblies, the cubic infinite periodic minimal surfaces of genus three: Gyroid (G), Dia...

Strong Acid-Nonionic Surfactant Lyotropic Liquid-Crystalline Mesophases as Media for the Synthesis of Carbon Quantum Dots and Highly Proton Conducting Mesostructured Silica Thin Films and Monoliths.

Lyotropic liquid-crystalline (LLC) materials are important in designing porous materials, and acids are as important in chemical synthesis. Combining these two important concepts will be highly beneficial to chemistry and material science. In this work, we show that a strong acid can be used as a solvent for the assembly of nonionic surfactants into various mesophases. Sulfuric acid (SA), 10-la...

The effects of pressure and temperature on the energetics and pivotal surface in a monoacylglycerol/water gyroid inverse bicontinuous cubic phase.

We have studied the effect of pressure and temperature on the location of the pivotal surface in a lipid inverse bicontinuous gyroid cubic phase (Q(G)(II)), described by the area at the pivotal surface (An), the volume between the pivotal surface and the bilayer midplane (Vn), and the molecular volume of the lipid (V). Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to measure the swelling behavio...
